Mr. and Mrs. Herman Stone came to Montevallo just before 1950 when the coal mines at Boothton, west of Montevallo near the Cahaba River, closed for good. Herman had spent 18 years there as a coal miner before having to find a new way to earn a living. He and his wife opened Stone Jewelry on Main Street in a small portion of the larger space occupied by the Little Shop. The two businesses operated cheek by jowl for many years. Herman Stone became an expert watch and jewelry repairman while his wife handled the retail sales functions of the store. The store changed hands in the 1970’s when Billie Lacey bought the business and continued to operate it successfully for many years herself.
Thank you Clay Nordan, Vice President of the Montevallo Historical Society, for this information!
