To complete our story about the George Kroell house on Main Street, we’re reprinting two articles from the 1960’s that provide a bit more history about the house as well as an account of its ultimate fate. The first article is from a 1963 issue of the Montevallo High School student newspaper, the SPOTLIGHT. The top illustration you see here of this former local treasure was drawn by Laurie Orr Binion that appeared in the collection of stories about growing up in Montevallo (published in 2000) entitled, “Time Has Made a Change in Me,” edited by Robert David Ward.
The bottom illustration is from a 1977 book entitled “Good Morning Yesterday” that was published by the Local History Class of Thompson High School in Alabaster. The artist was not identified. The class was taught by Wilton native, Tommie Mowery Harrison, who was also the faculty advisor for the student publishing project.
Thank you Clay Nordan, Vice President of Montevallo Historical Society, for this information!
