This week we move on to the first true residential dwelling house that we have encountered on our trek along Main Street. It's fitting that it would be a Montevallo architectural icon, the spectacularly massive and ornate George Kroell house– better known as "Owl's Cove." Sadly, it is no longer standing for us to admire and enjoy in the flesh, but its memory and importance to the history of the town remains in the hearts and minds of those who remember it and even among those who never saw it first-hand.
For the June 2019 issue of "Chamber Chatter," the monthly newsletter of the Montevallo Chamber of Commerce, Montevallo Historical Society director Marty Everse contributed an interesting and entertaining account of the local social event of the century that took place at Owl's Cove in 1900, shortly after it was first occupied by the Kroell family. This week's "Throwback Thursday" offering shares Marty's excellent piece with those who might have missed it, and reminds those who might have already seen it just how incredible "The Party" must have been.
We'll have more on the house and this location on Main Street in our next installments.
Thank you Clay Nordan, Vice President of Montevallo Historical Society, for this information!
