Red Mahan and the Klotzman family were across-the-street neighbors on Main Street for many years. (Clockwise from top) Harry Klotzman and Red Mahan on the curb in front of Klotzman’s store. Red’s son, Mike Mahan, with his great friend Harry Klotzman loafing in front of Harry’s family’s store around 1950. All the cars parked on the street offers a strong indication of the many customers the thriving retail businesses in Montevallo attracted in those years. In the background can be seen the Baptist Church, the old Rogan house, the Cities Service gas station and the large oak trees that lined and shaded Main Street until they were cut down for street widening around 1960. Red Mahan stands in the doorway of his closed barber shop that was an institution on Main Street for half a century.
